Another blast from The Past

Probably the act I’m most looking forward to seeing tomorrow at the SAW Hit Factory Live concert isn’t Kylie (or Sinitta) but Bananarama. An opportunity to see the greatest girlband of all time is not something to be passed lightly. And while 99% of me is cheerfully resigned to it just being Sara and Keren, a tiny bit of me is still holding out for Siobhan Fahey to appear/gatecrash halfway through one of their songs. While this is very unlikely to happen, you can watch the video below of their last performance together as a trio, covering Abba’s ‘Waterloo’ for Eurotrash’s A Song for Europe in 1998:

P.S.  The accompanying interview complete with obviously hammered Siobhan is a bit of a hoot.

Another blast from the The Past

If there’s one thing I love about Kim Wilde, it’s her ability to effortlessly attempt different genres. Since the rockier sound at the start of her career she’s experimented with everything from ballads to soul. Her 1995 single ‘Shame’ , covering an earlier hit by Zhané  failed to set the charts on fire because record stores hadn’t stocked it on time and she was too ill to promote it. A SHAME as this should’ve heralded a new era of Disco Kim, not a six year career break.

Another blast from The Past

It’s only Madonna’s banned ‘American Life’ video!

I’ve been giving the American Life album a bit of much-needed attention lately in the wake of disappointment with MDNA. It’s by no means a perfect effort but it was definitely the last Madonna record that managed to pull off both “seriousface Madonna Louise Ciconne tackles big issues” AND “Madge, Queen of the Gays and the Dancefloor”. As for the video itself – much like the song it’s both sublime and ridiculous. Quite how it managed to get banned just goes to show how prickly everyone was around the time of the Iraq invasion. One hopes that Rihanna would’ve suffered the same fate with ‘Hard’…

Another blast from The Past

The best single by the best British girlband who are THIRTY this year and still going strong (well, 2/3 anyway).

The 7 minute long 12″ version is even better, but the video itself is a hoot. Think of it as a prophetic warning to Simon Cowell.

Another blast from The Past

Yesterday was the 46th birthday of one of Britain’s coolest pop icons. Who? SAMANTHA BLOODY FOX that’s who. Granted she might be more remembered for getting her mammaries and muff out over the past 25 years, but she’s also responsible for a series of faultless musical offerings, not least 1998 album  21st Century Fox which the below is taken from:

Here’s to another 46 years of softcore pornography and classy dance-pop Sam.

Another blast from The Past

It really wouldn’t surprise me if the Minogue sisters were somehow trapped on some kind of karmic wheel of fortune – whenever things seem to be going well for one of them, it’s up shit creek for the other. Dannii’s X Factor career peak had started to decline since the Aphrodite-era return of her elder sister but the tables truly turned this week; while Kylie was celebrating her lauded Anti-Tour, news was breaking that Home and Away‘s Emma Jackson was headed for divorce for a second time.  The best advice she should follow? Her own. Take a delve into your flawless back catalogue Dannii and remember that LOVE’S ON EVERY CORNER etc.

Why not have something from Greece’s answer to Madonna, the iconic Anna Vissi?

Same Pete, different face. Probably my favourite SAW song by Dead or Alive. Here’s hoping they play it at the upcoming Hit Factory Live concert, a.k.a. “Gay Glasto”.

Another Blast from The Past

I’m sure you lot won’t begrudge me for ANOTHER Kylie post in the space of a week. This phwoarsome megamix has been floating around for a while on SoundCloud and Kylie herself got all hot under the collar about it. Well now some clever dick has put together the audio with the relevant video, giving you something like this…

And people get excited about Céline Dion? PLEASE.
